How to Help Yourself Fall Asleep Using Natural Remedies for Insomnia

Don’t want to take sleeping pills?

I didn’t either. I struggled with insomnia for over 12 years and never wanted to reply on sleep-aid medication or sleep supplements to be able to fall asleep. Natural remedies for insomnia are definitely the healthiest way to help yourself fall asleep quickly and easily.

I’m going to be honest with you: there isn’t a magic pill that can get rid of your insomnia forever. Believe me, I wish there were! You see, sleeping pills and sleep supplements are only treating the symptom (insomnia) and don’t actually get to the root cause of why you have insomnia in the first place.

However, you can absolutely get rid of your insomnia using natural techniques that will eventually retrain your brain to allow you to fall asleep easily again, as long as you do them consistently.

There are a few very easy items you can implement into your life that will help make falling asleep easier for you. If you have a tendency to become anxious either at night or during the day, these techniques are also for you! I really should call this post: natural remedies for insomnia AND anxiety!

Having overcome insomnia myself using only natural solutions, I’d love to share with you the best natural remedies for insomnia to implement into your every day. Here are a few simple items you can implement into your life that will help make falling asleep easier:

  1. Having a consistent meditation routine.

The state of mind that your brain experiences during meditation is the exact same state that your brain is in when falling asleep! Brain-science at its finest :)

By meditating at least once a day, this is training your brain to relax more quickly and “on command”, whenever you want it to. Meditation is the perfect technique to practice because it trains your brain to put itself into a relaxed state.

This makes meditation one of the most effective natural remedies for insomnia and anxiety, and for improving overall sleep in general!

  2. Optimizing your evening routine to promote sleep.

There is so much that we think about during the day, that when night time rolls around, our mind is usually clouded with so many endless thoughts from during the day.

Allow yourself 1-2 hours before wanting to fall asleep to detach from the busy day you just experienced. Avoid texting, phone calls, and be very cognizant of what you are reading, watching, or listening to.

You must also avoid working, so put away your computer and other work-related items at least 1-2 hours before bed. This is critical so that your mind can disengage and quiet down, which is essential for falling asleep easily and quickly.

This is also critical so that your eyes don’t have to look at blue light, which can delay the natural sleep hormone melatonin from flowing in your body. To make sure you're not forgetting any of these items, click here to download my free sleep routine checklist.

  3. Use the evening time to do a passive activity that you enjoy!

Focus on yourself 1-2 hours before bed. This is a great time to practice self-care. Make sure you're exposing your mind to only positive and neutral content. This is super important so that your mind can relax and quiet down, so we want to make sure that you aren't experiencing any negativity.

Think of the 1-2 hour timeframe before going to sleep each night as the time to solely focus on yourself! #selfcare :)

I recommend reading a book or watching a positive or uplifting TV show. Ending the day with a positive, relaxed mindset is critical for letting your mind drift off into sleep as easily as possible.

  4. Improve your bedroom environment.

Simple things like making sure the room is cool, dark without glowing lights from electronics (digital clocks, lit-up computer chargers that are plugged in), and having comfortable pillows and bedding.

Also, take a look at the paint color in your bedroom. Light and cool blue or green tones having the most calming effect and are the best paint colors for your bedroom. If you have a harsh or dark paint color, consider doing a quick DIY home project to paint the walls a color more conducive to sleep and relaxation.

  5. Try drinking herbal tea an hour before bed.

There are a few notable teas that are most effective at helping the body calm itself by lowering stress levels and releasing tension. Try sipping Chamomile tea with one drop of 100% lavender essential oil, Lemon Balm tea, or Passion Flower tea about one hour before bedtime.

I personally don't drink anything for 1-2 hours before bed because I always have to use the restroom at least once every night, and drinking anything just makes me wake up even more times! But, you know your body best, and herbal teas are a great natural remedy to test out and see if it helps you.

My personal experience has shown me that incorporating meditation into your daily routine, in addition to reserving the last few hours of the day as time to focus on yourself, is going to be the most effective at getting rid of insomnia over the long-haul.

Using natural remedies for insomnia and anxiety is the best long-term solution for regaining control over your sleep if you don’t want to be dependent on prescription sleep medication, or even natural supplements like melatonin!
